We've included some frequently asked questions below. Please take a look and contact the directors if you do not find an answer to your question.
What instruments are included in the orchestra?
The orchestra at Oakwood is a "string orchestra." The instruments we teach include violin, viola, cello, and bass.
How do we decide what instrument to play?
The orchestra directors will help your child decide what instrument to play during the String Drive in May. Stringed instruments come in many sizes, so it is possible for all students to learn any of the instruments.
Does my child need to have previous experience playing an instrument?
No! We train fifth grade string students from the beginning and string education continues through high school.
Who provides the instruments?
The String Drive includes time for you to visit with various instrument providers. The expectation is that parents will rent an instrument for their child's use but there are school district instrument available for those who cannot afford to rent one.
Does my child have to practice?
Yes! A fifth grade beginner should practice about 20 minutes per day once they know how to hold the instrument. 6th grade students should practice about 30 minutes per day. We know that students are busy so it's ok to take 1-2 days off per week.
Do we have after school practices and/or concerts?
We occasionally have after school rehearsals but they are mostly for sixth grade students. Fifth grade students participate in two evening concerts during the year. You will be notified of the dates in advance so that you can make plans to attend.
Can my child participate in sports and be in orchestra?
ABSOLUTELY! The middle school and high school directors work with the coaches to make every effort to avoid conflicts in scheduling so that students may participate in both.
